I love this wedding because it illustrates the importance of the following things:

1.) The location where you get ready [** This is often overlooked, but the location where you get ready is the setting for 1/4 of your pictures, so make sure it has a lot of windows! You want the dress pictures to be nice. :) Heidi and Aaron got ready at the Downtown Sheraton, which is where Geoff and I got ready for our own wedding, and it brought back a lot of happy memories! Hotels are great for getting ready because of the big windows.]

2.) The location where you hold your ceremony and reception [**This seems silly that this could be overlooked, but wherever you have your ceremony is most likely the place where you’ll have your photographs taken unless you move to your reception first… which is possible, but often logistically messy. So make sure that you LOVE your ceremony venue! This makes up the setting of about 2/4 of your pictures and possibly your most important pictures ever – your newlywed shots.

3.) The time of your ceremony and photographs [**This is VERY important. Although we have made some awesome portraits shooting at high noon, it’s really important if you have the means to control the time of your ceremony so that your photographs take place about an hour before sundown, give or take depending on the size of the groups. You want to take advantage of awesome natural light. Of course, this isn’t always possible, but it’s nice when you can. :)

4.) The importance of not being afraid to show you a little public display of affection now and then. ;)

Heidi and Aaron are every photographer’s dream as they are natural posers. They’re always very very affectionate, not camera shy, not people shy, and basically need no posing instruction whatsoever. It’s like Blue Steel 24/7. They not only crack me up, but they’re adorable and gorgeous at the same time. Their wedding was stunning and I had a soft spot in my heart for their locations – The Raleigh Rose Garden, which was the spot of my very first wedding I shot, and the Sheraton, the hotel for our wedding. :)

The flowers for her veil (above) were made from Heidi’s wedding dress – a really adorable idea! And the view (below) of the skyline, brought to you by the windows in the Sheraton. ;)

Geoff followed the guys around all morning (and second shot for me the rest of the day – I’d say about half of the images on the blog are his. Thanks, Geoff!!) I didn’t get to see them until I uploaded the photographs later, but Aaron had on some killer sunglasses that morning.

Heidi’s after-party dress deserved a shot too. :) And her bridesmaid’s necklaces were all handmade!

I’m not quite sure how to preface the following set of portraits other than to say that Heidi is drop-dead amazingly gorgeous, Aaron makes a happy and handsome husband, the roses in the garden were exquisite, and the light was totally on our side. THESE PICTURES ROCK, if I do say so myself. ;)

Seriously – what a stunning bride. Aaron, you should probably have this photograph printed and placed in every available spot at your job just to make your coworkers jealous.

I have been getting more and more into dramatically lit portraits. Thanks for these, perfectly placed sun! You are the best sometimes.

Horray for the Sheraton! Heidi and Aaron’s reception was held in the Hannover Ballroom, which was awesome, and the coordinator (Joanie Waters) and the DJ (Paul Fitts) did a great job!

The couple made a guest signing book out of their engagement photographs they took with me – and I loved that someone commented on Aaron’s poodle hat. That, too, was one of my favorites, Stacy. ;)

Thank you, Heidi and Aaron, for a beautiful wedding and reception! We love love love these pictures and hope you do too. :)

Reshma+Darren’s wedding day finally came! This was a beautiful and very emotional day for not only the couple but for their families as well. And let me tell you, you could not find a more supportive, loving, community-conscious bunch. Main themes of the wedding centered not just around building a beautiful family out of Reshma, Darren, and Selena, but spreading that love and support into the community and helping others. I don’t think I’ve ever seen families less selfish on what is typically a pretty selfish day. ;) It was beautiful! And of course, our bride was GORGEOUS and Darren was handsome and Selena was adorable… as usual. :)

I looooved this room for a wedding ceremony. The circular-ness (is that a word?) made for a very intimate vibe. It was also fun to take pictures of. :)

Reshma and her brother Sheel, a few moments before the walk down the aisle.

Raleigh wedding photographerReverend Kayelily Middleton was the ceremony officiant and did a beautiful job. She was very calm, serene, and tied this ceremony’s Hindu and Christian aspects together perfectly. Reshma’s family is of the Hindu faith, while Darren’s is Christian, so they decided on a fusion wedding ceremony incorporating parts of each other’s traditions. Reshma’s daughter (now Darren’s lovely daughter as well!) served as the beautiful flowergirl. :)

Reverend Kayelily MiddletonReshma was walked down the aisle by both her father, (Dr!) Babu and her brother, (Dr!) Sheel. Not a bad deal at all! ;)

Raleigh wedding photographerThe couple had a unity candle and performed the Mangal Phera – circling around the holy fire symbolizing the walk of life. They walked clockwise around the circular table four times with Reshma leading the first three, and Darren leading the last.

Raleigh wedding photographerThey then performed the Saptapati – the seven steps of marriage vows. The couple would speak their vows while taking small steps around the table.

Raleigh wedding photographerLast, Darren ties a sacred necklace around the bride’s neck. This is known as the Mangal Sutra. The necklace symbolizes a married woman.

Raleigh wedding photographerThey did incorporate the “you may kiss the bride” into the ceremony. Her mother Meena, who is hilarious and adorable and also lived in Pittsburgh (!), leaned over during the rehearsal to tell me, “They are doing the kissing thing. We told them it was okay, but with weddings in our culture we normally say no… no kissing!” :) This, as well as a unity sand ceremony they performed with Selena, was part of the incorporation of a traditional Christian ceremony along with several prayers from both the Christian faith and the Hindu faith.

Raleigh wedding photographerSo for those of you who’ve been to the Streets of Southpoint, where Maggiano’s is located in Durham, it’s basically an upscale outdoor mall type of area. So what better background to shoot with than the Anthropologie wall?! :)

Reshma: Of course you do.

Raleigh wedding photographerLADIES – DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THE FLUFFY DRESSES. THEY MAKE FOR BEAUTIFUL PICTURES. Her dress was gooorgeous. And this ring shot, although very simple, is probably my favorite one to date.

Raleigh wedding photographerThe father-daughter dance was very emotional. I typically do not cry at weddings. When I’m happy, I’m happy – not crying. But this got me a little choked up and I think made all girls in the room miss their dads.

Simply CakesTim, the DJ, did a great job during the ceremony and the reception. DJs are surprisingly one of the people the photographer interacts with the most at the wedding, and it’s always fun when you get along and can work in sync!

Thank you, Reshma, Darren, Selena, and families and friends of the couple, for a beautiful wedding day and for your patience, help, and support along the way. :) We look forward to seeing you again soon! Darren – we owe you a session with your Dallas Cowboys gear… we guess. :P :D

We had all sorts of good times in Charlotte! This is Sarah and Jimmy, the second Charlotte couple we had the fantastic good luck of booking this year. :) They too live in Charlotte but are getting married in Asheville, and I was too excited to meet them. Sarah and I had talked over the phone and got along great, but it’s always nice to put a face to a voice. And, of course, to meet Jimmy – her other half. These guys are two peas in an adorable outdoorsy pod! Jimmy is a rock climbing instructor (neat!) and Sarah teaches Algebra 2 (yay teachers!).

They both love spending time outdoors and are in a transient phase of life (both are from Georgia, living in Charlotte, and possibly moving on shortly to the northeast), so we wanted their pictures to focus on them, their love for each other, and their love for the outdoors. Sarah suggested Freedom Park which, although located nearly in uptown Charlotte, is an awesome outdoorsy oasis! We took the pictures pretty early when we’d still have great light and, despite Jimmy, Geoff, and I yawning a whole heck of a lot, we had a great time and the pictures came out fabulous! Having a couple as cute as them makes it easy, though. :)

It doesn’t get much more outdoorsy than this! I read somewhere that Charlotte is the #1 worst city in the US for springtime allergies, and I believe it. :)

These suspension bridges reminded me of Costa Rica… only not as fundamentally unstable.

So I found this giant boulder thing in the middle of the park and wanted to use it because it had some funky light going on that I wanted to work with. It seemed like a really easy spot to sit on, but it turns out that it’s really smooth and Sarah just continually slipped off.

Sarah: I’m slipping off!

Carolyn: Jimmy, can you hold Sarah up? There… that doesn’t look too awkward. :P

Sometimes you just have to go with it. :) Sometimes it works! Sometimes it doesn’t. But I liked this lighting and color too much to give it up!
