city life.

when i lived in pittsburgh i went to school downtown. my dorm was in a skyscraper and i lived on floors 13, 17, and 21 (moving day was, well, interesting). point park university at the time consisted of 3 buildings. our dorm, the skywalk-attached classroom building, and the dreaded library that you had to actually go outside and down the street to visit. i’ve heard rumors about a freshman who won a dare of never going outside for the entire semester. it was the lazy man’s paradise… all elevators and everything you needed was a floor up or a floor down.

of course, if you did go outside, point park was conveniently sandwiched between a halfway house and a busy city intersection (lots of great stories about that halfway house, by the way) in the middle of the city. i lived downtown in that skyscraper for 3 years. during my senior year geoff returned from RIT  and we had an apartment in the north side, arguably pittsburgh’s most dangerous neighborhood. there were several shootings on our street – “it’s okay – that happens a few blocks up, and nothing ever happens on this side of the street!” geoff would cheerfully remind me.

i also was born in and, later in my high school days spent considerable time in, wilkinsburg, pittsburgh’s other arguably most dangerous neighborhood. there’s an awesome little venue called roboto where we’d go see shows and hang out.

needless to say, i’ve spent a lot of time in incredibly seedy and dangerous places. now i’m living on a tree-lined street with a community pool in a well-landscaped suburb of raleigh and i believe i’ve lost my touch. i used to wander around downtown and the north side all the time back in pittsburgh taking photos. i became extremely good at learning when i should be afraid… and i very rarely was. i was often stopped on the street and bus (oh the public transportation memories!) and talked to, but it was rare if someone gave me a hard time. sure, there was the occasional really creepy dude who’d ask where i lived, and the really crazy woman threatening to kill everyone on the 71A, but they were pretty much few and far between.

now that i live here i have to drive an unfortunate 20 minutes to get to actual downtown. we decided to move slightly outside the city to be closer to both of our jobs at the time. i’m downtown all the time but usually at night and usually with a group of people. i don’t walk around aimlessly for hours during the day shooting like i used to. i miss that and i am going to try and start doing it again, 20 minute drive and pain in the ass parking or not.

unfortunately, like i said, i have slightly lost my touch living in the ‘burbs for the past year and have lost a lot of my “street confidence.” of course, you kind of do lose that when two incredibly creepy dudes go out of their way to follow you for several blocks shouting, “you takin’ pictures? i’ll pose for you, baby!” and you have to bust out your cell phone to call your boyfriend at work so he’ll stay on the phone with you til you get to your car which is the most isolated spot of the city you could’ve possibly parked.

ugh.

so obviously my photo session was cut short today… and i started with the basics of downtown. i figure i’ll work my way up to the seedy areas where i was most comfortable in pittsburgh and stick to the well-lit paved parts of raleigh until i remember how to handle the all the shady scenarios.

a jumpstart on autumn.

i love autumn. i really do. and not just because toothpastefordinner.com has several great autumn cartoons. and although summer is not over, i can tell you that my mind is totally over it already. i’m not sure why… i think it was the several days where it was kind of chilly because of all the rain. the light is also beginning to change – you know how autumn light is very different around 5:30 than summer light? or am i just nuts? anyway, i’ve been too busy to use the pool so to me that means that we might as well start autumn.

why i love autumn (in a list):

  • pumpkin pie
  • weather
  • colored leaves
  • stepping in crunchy leaves
  • halloween
  • my birthday
  • halloween candy
  • great photography light
  • having the windows open
  • carving pumpkins
  • wearing a jacket
  • everything about october

i’m sure there are things i am missing. but it is wonderful. last year geoff and i were new to north carolina and explored the mountains and hanging rock for the first time, so when i think of autumn now i think of those things.

it was absolutely amazing up on hanging rock in the fall. we decided we would hike up to the ledge because we knew there would be an awesome view. however, we weren’t entirely prepared for the hike instead of the walk, as evidenced by us wearing our chucks instead of hiking shoes. here we are at the top of hanging rock… both of the boys pretending to be excited but actually terrified. i was the one who climbed out closest to the edge while geoff and colombo tip-toed slowly out onto the rock, then perched themselves in a relatively safe place and laughed nervously:

hehehe…i’m not going any further than this… hehehe.

i plan on going back soon with my wide angle lens. raleigh was pretty awesome in the fall too last year. the weather was amazing and lasted for at least two months. the leaves were also colored for a really long time. eventually they fell off, but it took them a while.

i won’t be home for fall in pittsburgh at all this year which makes me a little sad. i am going home in september and december, but am skipping out on fall there entirely. fall in pittsburgh is cold, but then again i consider pittsburgh having really only two seasons: spring and winter. it’s only really warm in summer for a few days. fall is way too chilly and the leaves change color and fall off the trees within a week. i think that’s mostly because it rains so frequently in the fall there.

*exaggeration… kind of.

i am hoping the fall in raleigh will be how it was last year. it will be the first october i have never been home. last year i was in north carolina for my actual birthday but went home the next weekend to see my family. this year my family is coming down to see me which will be lots of fun. my sister, mom, geoff and i are going to see U2 at nc state’s carter-finley stadium. woo! i am still trying to figure out how and if i can smuggle my camera inside. meanwhile, my dad (who harbors a strong disliking of crowds and bono) will stay at our house and entertain the kittens. and hopefully not cause any trouble at the science museum like last time:

for button.

on june 17th, 2009 i had to put my cat button to sleep. he was 14 years old. i got “yogurt” back when i was 9 and mercifully renamed him button after he tried to eat all of the buttons on my shirt. when i moved to raleigh a year ago he was too old and had too many health problems to come with me. he had mysterious off and on problems for several years, but our other cat, tang, had really severe asthma. taking care of tang occupied most of our waking hours for a long time before he passed away on june 26th, 2008, right before i moved to raleigh.

so i moved… and my mom and dad took great care of button who, at the time, had health problems that the vets were still trying to figure out. eventually he was diagnosed with colon cancer. he had surgery to remove a majority of the tumor in january, but we were told it would come back within 6-18 months. sure enough, 6 months later, it was back. i flew into pittsburgh to be with my mom, dad, and button to put him to sleep. he was suffering, but i got to spend one more night with him playing with his laser pointer and toy soldier.

i know a lot of people don’t understand the impact of putting an animal to sleep, but my cats have always had the personalities equal to any one of my human family members and are greatly missed. i also feel sad that i didn’t get to spend much time with him after i moved; we were constantly together for most of my life since i was 9. it is hard on me that we grew apart. like i said, most people probably won’t understand this, but my cats really are family.

today i started making a scrapbook for button just like the ones i made for tang. it is helping me remember a lot of things. i had made an online memorial for tang when i had a flickr account with a poem that reminded me of him. now it reminds me of  both of them. i hope they’re doing well… i know they are.

BEAMED FROM THE BRIGHT CATTERY IN THE SKY
(Michael Hatwell)

In case you have been wondering
Just how I am getting along
In my new surroundings
Or worry whether I have learned to cope
With the easy rhythm and pace
For which this place is renowned
Then listen: I have been chasing little mice again
Sweeter, lighter, infinitely more fragrant
Than any I ever brought into the bedroom
For your pleasure
In the old days.
That having been said,
I wouldn’t for all the world wish you to infer
That they stint the grub up here:
Admittedly
The celestial fish are not especially exciting
(Their natural zodiac ripeness has had to be homogenised
for the general run of feline palates)
But on the plus side
The nice cat-lady who comes round,
All gowned in blue (my favourite colour)
And with glory crowned,
Pours out a warm and creamy whiteness
That is literally
Quite heavenly.
Someone usually remembers
To cut my claws
And tickle my ear
So that side of things is catered for,
One might say,
Adequately enough.
I think of you sometimes
Certain that you will come one day
To take me on your knee
And talk to me the way you used to.
When that day comes
I shall let you know
Loudly and unambiguously
That things round here have finally begun to go
Really very well indeed:
I shall add to ordinary space and time
My own particular dimension
Of thick, soft-throated sound.
