Rachel and Brandon got engaged! And then, while searching for wedding venues in New Orleans, they serendipitously stumbled across some weddings I shot down there and contacted me to do their engagement session in Durham where they live. They were super pleasant and friendly via e-mail and phone and I was already excited to work with them and their dog Jovie. But then, a few days before the session, Rachel casually sends me an email that reads, “And a heads up. We recently rescued a kitten, so he’d have to be involved here as well.” I like how she worded this: the kitten has to be involved… as if to imply there might be some sort of chance I wouldn’t accept?!?? Or would tell her, “NO. ABSOLUTELY NO KITTENS.” Rachel did not know me well enough when she sent that email but I think she does now. This is when I grabbed my Crazy Cat Lady cape from the back of my office chair, slung it around my shoulders and got to work converting her engagement/family session into 100% a kitten session without even trying or thinking about it. I did try very hard to pet Jovie the dog and hug Rachel and Brandon equally but let’s face it, I think they all knew I was there for Crash the Cat. Crash is really good at posing because he’s really good at sleeping when he’s not running full speed around the house. Jovie is really good at eating Crash’s cat toys and also entire Dominos pizzas when we weren’t looking. Rachel and Brandon are good at looking cute and adopting a lot of animals and eating pizza. I wish I was still shooting weddings so I could follow them to Nola, but these kitten photos were a good consolation prize.
Just before I start this blog post, I’d like to state for the record that if you’re looking for the person to thank for the bats on the website, IT’S SARAH. She’s my bat designer extraordinaire even though and clearly excels at drawing really, really cute ones.
Sarah and Paul are our wedding clients from a few years back whom we love and cherish and have maintained a friendship with while bonding over our mutual love of guacamole, mid century modern furnishings, mountaineering disasters, and complaining about Game of Thrones. They had been living in Durham and we were quite thankful to have them here. Then they lived in London for a bit for Paul’s work, and we visited them on our way back from Italy! Then they came back to Durham for a bit, but when the opportunity came for them to move to NYC for another bit for Paul’s work, we encouraged them to go even though we were sad because living in NYC is, we feel, an important cultural experience to have… and since Sarah and Paul are so good at jet-setting and cultivating travel and new experiences, we know they’d get along great, and so they have!
And now we visit them in NYC! And take their pictures! They were so gracious to let us stay with them in Brooklyn and introduced us to literally the best gluten-free pizza I’ve ever had. We were happy to roam around the area quiteeee early in the morning (sorry guyssss) to take pictures of them, and they were patient while Geoff and I gazed lovingly into the cat cafe (Sarah’s afraid of cats but it’s okay, we’re still friends). We’re so happy for them to have this experience of living in NYC and even though we miss them, they’re only a text message about people dying on Everest away.
Geoff and I were so thrilled to finally have our first wedding in NYC! We’ve shot sessions there a few times, but we’re glad that we’re able to end our last year as wedding photographers with an actual NYC wedding under our belts thanks to Diana and Long. We’ve always felt like they might be logistical travel challenges (do we take the subway? do we take an Uber? what about traffic?), but the truth is that we’ve had many local Durham weddings that were significantly harder to navigate, and it actually ended up being a breeze. We got outside Diana’s hotel early enough for Geoff to grab a Central Park hot dog (a requirement), and we were on our way.
One of my favorite parts of Central Park is the pond area, where it’s green and watery but you can see all the reflections of the 5th Ave buildings in the water and in the background, and we were lucky enough that Diana was getting ready right in The Pierre. So we took photos directly in that area on one of the nicest weather days and it was lovely. Then we hopped on over to Queens for Diana and Long’s wedding ceremony at the Museum of the Moving Image which was incredible! A movie theater about movies, there are a lot of phenomenal displays in there, including a permanent Jim Henson exhibit where I got to take a selfie with the original Emmet Otter puppet, sad Christmas movie legend. Chewbacca’s head also resides there, as well as a ton of vintage toys and old computer and video game systems. If you’re ever in Queens you should check it out.
Diana and Long were surrounded by their families and friends as they got married in the awesome blue theater, some family members coming from as far away as China, and it was a heart-felt event. They celebrated their reception catching up with loved ones and doing a phenomenally choreographed first dance. Their wedding was music themed, and they had great table cards shaped like cassettes, and different records identifying each table. A lot of time and thought went into their decor, and it was sweet to see what music brought them together. They are super kind and fun-loving people, and we were so happy to work with them on their wedding. It was a big deal for us to have a wedding in NYC, and we’re happy it got to be with them.
