We have been looking forward to photographing Kate+Dan’s wedding for so long, ever since Kate sent us a picture of Dan playing ultimate frisbee when his hair and beard were really long and I casuuuually commented that he looks like John Oates. Then Kate said that Dan gets really excited whenever anyone tells him that he looks like John Oates, to which I responded that I “made his dreaaaaams come true (woo oo, woo oo, woo oo)” and then sent her a link to the Yacht Rock series on Youtube (if you’ve been following any of what I just said, look up Yacht Rock and you’ll enjoy it). Anyway, we’ve talked apocalyptic terror and Connie Britton and pixie cuts and Kate sent me a cute camera card asking if we’d follow them around all day long, to which we responded with a JPEG of John Cusack holding a stereo above his head, and the rest is history.

So we ended up in Tennessee and had the best time ever! We stayed in a retreat with the family and guests and people fed us and were nice to us and we took walks in the woods and had a view of the mountains while we ate some oatmeal. I had recently cut my hair into a pixie cut that was near identical to Maggie’s, one of their officiants, and people sometimes told me I did a good job marrying Kate and Dan. I hope that Maggie got some compliments on her ninja photography skills. Dan played some tunes with the super awesome Laura Lackey’s Rhythm Revue and his relatives talked about how he liked to put ketchup on things he disliked as a kid. The wedding party found an apple tree and we ate them and they were delicious (the apples, not the wedding party). Kate and Dan – you’re wonderful and we love you. Thank you for being gracious hosts to us and treating us like family and for that gluten-free chocolate torte because that thing was fantastic.

The last time we saw Nicolette and Tom was back in June 2015 for the engagement session that resulted in one of my favorite pictures of all time. I stated then that I was pretty sure you could put Nicolette and Tom in front of the most horrific backdrop ever and they’d still make it look good, and I stand by that statement despite continuing to only see them in front of really beautiful scenery. Maybe we’ll meet them in a random road-side Waffle House at some point to test my theory. Anyway, this time they brought us up to their home turf of Connecticut (her family’s from Danbury and his is from New York) to photograph their serious stunner of a wedding. This is our second time photographing a wedding in CT, and it is a tremendously beautiful state. Lots of trees, big rocks, water, adorable houses. So then you put these two really good looking people in front of the really good looking scenery and everything’s just really Zoolander-level good looking. Also – this wedding, which was incredible in terms of solid planning, decor, and fun family+friends, was Tom’s first ever wedding he’s been to. He set the bar pretty high for himself, eh?! Congratulations to some of our favorite people ever. Thank you for being so sweet and wonderful. We cannot wait until you join the ranks of North Carolinians!

We first met Ginny and Carson when we shot their engagement session in Durham last year and, upon publishing them, everyone thought I was her and wondered what I had done with Geoff. But Geoff was safe and sound and I was indeed not Ginny despite also having big glasses and a pixie cut. Then Ginny and I both began growing our hair out, occasionally sending pictures to each other of our awkward hair lengths for moral support. Carson then also grew his beard out. Geoff still maintained his beard. And now we all kind of match again – beards for the guys and chinnish-shoulderish length hair for the girls that I threatened to cut off at least twice a day.

But I digress. We joined them and their super fun family and friends in Richmond to celebrate their wedding. It rained sideways (we’ve been having a terrible track record with rain this year) and I photographed six very polite and patient women out in that mess, heels sinking into the ground and all. But I didn’t have an umbrella, so I became very gross quite quickly, and ended up stepping into an old church soaking wet and over apologizing. The groomsmen congratulated me on my efforts (thank you). The very old church that I got a bit damp with my presence was the church where Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech in 1775. Ginny is a descendent of Patrick Henry (neat!) and Carson isn’t, but he’s pretty cool nonetheless. We love them both and wish them all the happiness in the world. Thanks for having us up to Richmond, guys!
