We love shooting weddings in Asheville. We love it even more when llamas are at those weddings. And we love it even than that when the llamas are named Chocolate Chip and are really good at taking posing directions. Other great things about this wedding include:

  1. The Claxton Farm wedding venue which is nestled in the mountains and is gorgeous.
  2. Kim’s sparkly dress.
  3. Jeffrey’s (Kim’s dad) expression on their formal family portrait the year he was finally allowed to bring his cat (the photograph was prominently displayed at the wedding and is, by far, one of the best things we’ve ever seen).
  4. Goats.
  5. John making Kim laugh at all times and their adorable inability to take themselves seriously.
  6. Cats being mentioned a lot during the ceremony, notably John’s noble attempt to get along with Kim’s cat who was rumored to be slightly difficult (a statement that I can neither confirm nor deny).
  7. Our unscrupulous bribing of the ring bearers for photos.
  8. Did we mention the llama?

We booked Ashley and Kyle sometime last year and they quickly became the #1 supplier of funny cat videos to my Facebook page, and for that I’m forever grateful. At their wedding they had a large wall of personal photos and later in the night I was checking them out, only to discover a photo of Ashley taken at about 5 or 6 at her birthday party, wearing a seriously badass Lion King shirt and sitting next to a giant cat cake and a pile of Lisa Frank cat-themed party hats. We would’ve totally been elementary school BFFs, but now we’ll just have to settle for 30-some BFFS who still celebrate their birthdays with Lisa Frank party hats (I just found a pack of 8 cat ones on Etsy for $10.80. Let’s do this).

Regarding their wedding, it was awesome and comic booked themed! They had different characters at each table, and Kyle gave me permission to open one of his older Batman ones to use for the ring shots, which made me kind of nervous, but also feel super cool. This also gave me the opportunity to look at the sweet ads for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cereal. Anyway – it was super neat, and super indicative of the offbeat adorableness of Ashley and Kyle that makes us love them so much. Congratulations, guys!

When Jess and Steve e-mailed us to inquire about our availability to photograph a wedding in New Orleans, we did a lot of happy dances. So, so many happy dances. We’ve always wanted to visit Louisiana, and we knew New Orleans would provide the insanely varied and funky backdrop to a million killer wedding photos, but I’m not sure we realized just how awesome it would actually be. We estimated about a 10/10 on the awesome scale, but it ended up being more like a 51/10.

Their wedding venue was Race+Religious (on the corners of, you guessed it, Race and Religious streets) in the Lower Garden District. We were lucky enough to grab the Air BnB available next door so we literally walked about 5 feet to the wedding (best commute ever). And we spent the days before the wedding in awe of the venue, the Garden District, the French Quarter, and every other place we visited in New Orleans. Everything is old. Old, tilted, crumbling, peeling. Everything is a million different colors. The paint on buildings is chipped away to reveal concrete which is peeled away to reveal brick. There are palm trees and huge oaks destroying the sidewalks and ferns everywhere. It was like someone went inside my head and thought up the most visually interesting place for me ever and then put it in a city and a venue. I certainly left part of my heart there for sure as it’s basically an entire city devoted to the holiday of Halloween, and we all know how I feel about that. Bats bats bats.

Anyway – besides loving New Orleans and Race+Religious, we love Jess and Steve. A lot. They’re cooler than we could ever probably achieve, and it shows. Look at her dress! And the little tiny pictures she hand painted for her tables! And who can forget the pool donut? Also, her head smelled really great all day, so there’s that. Jess and Steve – thank you for bringing us to this fabulous city and showing us an amazing time. We heart you a lot.
