Durham Family Photographer

Carolyn Scott is a Durham family photographer. She specializes in candid and documentary at-home family photography in the Triangle area (Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary, etc). Carolyn’s work has been published in several popular books and magazines, including Apartment Therapy, BuzzFeed, and Fangoria. Locally, she’s been voted Best Photographer in Durham Magazine’s Best Of Durham and INDY Week’s Best of the Triangle. She lives in South Durham with her husband Geoff and three cats.

I’ve been really excited to photograph these guys since they listed Friday Night Lights as the best TV show and Pearl Jam as the best band on the contact form questionnaire. Then I completely even forgot to talk to them about it because I was too wrapped up in their awesome house and incredibly good looking selves. This family is adorable! Even Mason, the dog, is handsome and well behaved. Hannah and Sydney, the twins, are 3.5 and full of spunk and amazing dance moves. They’re fraternal twins instead of identical, but it’s pretty difficult for me to tell them apart, and if I were their parents, I’d definitely be dressing them as the twins from The Shining for every Halloween as long as they’d let me. They have Whitney Houston Wednesdays, where they dance around their living room to Whitney Houston songs, but they made an exception this week and moved it to Saturday. Adam and Rachel put the twins on their shoulders and then did some sort of synchronized dip like Olympic figure skaters and it was pretty amazing. So amazing, in fact, that I forgot entirely to talk to them about Coach Taylor.

This is the 4th time we’ve photographed Annie+Kunal (their last session is here), and it’s an absolute pleasure each time. Annnnd we’ll actually be seeing them again shortly for another session, so at this point I think we could safely move in and no one would notice. But for this session, Annie’s Dad Tim contacted us and wanted to get family photos while everyone was in town together after the holidays. So much has been happening for this family! Tim and his partner Lorre just moved to the area from Tucson, Arizona to be closer to Annie and Kunal, who just gave birth to their second daughter Adhira while keeping up with Aashna, their toddler extraordinaire (and budding chef/baker/soccer player). Lorre’s daughter Brianne just got back in town from some time spent in Japan, and Wanda, Annie’s grandmother, was visiting from elsewhere in NC. Kunal’s parents Mahesh and Rekha flew in from India to be with their kids and grandkids over the holidays, and Kunal’s brother Manu came in from Little Rock. So there was a ton of family, and they were all happy to be together! We were lucky to get to photograph them hanging out at Tim and Lorre’s beautiful home, baking cupcakes and chasing around Aashna. This was the first time we had seen everyone together since Annie and Kunal’s wedding in 2015, and a great time was had by all. :)

Guyyyyysss if you aren’t familiar with the fabulous Amina Ford of Amina Ford Photography then get ready because not only is she an incredible photographer but she’s also the most sparkly pregnant woman you’ve ever seen in your life! Andddd she’s great. Also, so is Jeremy. He’s not wearing sparkles and he’s a radiologist instead of a photographer but he makes incredible dad jokes (well prepared for when she gives birth) and they’re an incredible couple. They live in New York City with their two dogs whom Amina will readily tell you about, and Jeremy will come back and tell you that he’s essentially just a means to an end so Amina can have dogs (we secretly think Amina likes him in addition to the dogs, but we can’t be certain since Amina really freaking love dogs so no promises).

It’s not a super well-kept secret in the community that I’m not a big fan of networking, and I dislike getting coffee with people I don’t know, and I’m not particularly good at being friends with other wedding vendors. I promise I’m not a grinch in real life, I just don’t like to talk about work, nor do I want to talk about other people in the business, and would rather just avoid everyone but my clients. But I do have a handful of vendor friends who have somehow sneakily snuck their way into my cold, unloving heart, and Amina happens to be one of them. We’ve been internet friends for some time, and she’s always supportive and loving and I love her back. We were honored to do these maternity photos for her and her husband Jeremy on their trip into Durham to visit with her family. Best of luck with the pregnancy and delivery, and I hope you’re back someday to visit wearing an equally sparkly dress.
