Geoff and I photographed Katie and Tony’s wedding in Virginia back in 2017 when Katie wore this incredible pantsuit. Thankfully, the Durham area gained Katie and Tony back recently (!) and now we can have dinner with them and talk about podcasts. In addition, I was lucky enough to get to photograph them recently for a couple’s session! I love doing portraits with couples as it’s low-key and fun, and it’s cool to look back on them later with your partner (the best part is that no matter how old you think you look now, when you look back on pictures later, you will always look younger than you currently do! Isn’t that great?). We did a few at their house with their dog Caroline who is really adorable but only likes a handful of people (and I am not one of them… probably a Caroline vs. Carolyn thing) so I took photos of her from 25 feet away, and then we moved on to downtown Durham. Part of the fun of shooting in August is the fact that the weather doesn’t make a lick of sense, and even with a 10% chance of rain in the forecast, some sort of gnarly front moved in on us with 40mph winds and crazy clouds and we all ended up hiding underneath an overhang for a bit. But I’d happily hang with them under overhangs any day of the week, especially when it stops me from having to photoshop out a bunch of little rain dots on their shirts.

I might be a little bit biased but I feel like I get the coolest families to photograph, and Jennifer and Gabe’s crew did not disappoint. First, they have an incredible house in the trees that is occupied by two cats. I only met the one, but he was freaking cute, fat, and orange (three solid criteria for judging a cat). His name is Hess. He came with the house and is very friendly, and apparently quite used to modeling for cameras. The second cat’s name is Koby and he did not come out to meet me, but I’m certain I would’ve liked him. Second, they have two adorable children. Maeve is a few weeks old and enjoys sleeping, looking cute as heck, and acquiring beautiful quilts that were sewn by Jennifer’s mom. Lincoln is three and enjoys never, ever getting out of his pajamas (something I totally respect) and hunting for dinosaur eggs that his dad hides in Lincoln’s sandbox under the cover of night. Jennifer and Gabe themselves are fantastic parents and partners, super patient and kind to their kids and each other. I had a great time getting to know them and pretending that I lived in their fantastic house for a brief hour or two of my life.
I’ve known Lacie for years through my work with the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, and she’s one of the happiest, bubbliest humans I’ve had the pleasure to know. I’m always excited to see her whenever I do work for the DRA or whenever I randomly run into her in downtown Raleigh. I had met her husband Adam during one of these random run-ins (I believe outside of The Pour House, which he owns), but I was excited to spend more time getting to know him during his and Lacie’s newborn shoot with their son Desmond. Turns out that Adam is equally as amazing as Lacie, and also has very incredible hair. Desmond has a little bit of hair, but I’m kind of surprised that he didn’t come out with some sort of flowing mane as a nod to both his parents. He does, however, have baby eyebrows! Adorable. He was very excited and interested in what we were doing, so he wasn’t a big fan of sleeping except for a.) when he was held or b.) whenever Adam would put on Surfer Rosa by The Pixies. I have 100% confidence that he’s going to be a super cool kid because his parents are, plus he’ll be attending a lot of shows at The Pour House sporting his adorable baby headphones. A huge congratulations to Lacie and Adam, and a big welcome to the world to little baby Desmond (also a big big pet and a “WHO’S A GOOD BOY” to doggo Mud).
