We met Katy and Matt in Kitty Hawk for their engagement session last weekend after we were conveniently there for a wedding that we attended (yes, attended for once!). They were coming down from Virginia to have their session in the Outer Banks since they travel there frequently and love it, and we were more than happy to oblige since it’s always an amazing place to shoot. However, an “amazing place to shoot” usually means that you’re stuck with some sort of challenging element… namely a lot of sand in your camera bag and sticking to your lenses with sea-water air. Typically that’s all we need to contend with, but at this point in time there was a storm out in the ocean that caused the waves to be quite insane and pretty much took up the entire beach. We’d place Katy and Matt in a spot, and then they’d get hit with a giant wave that no one saw coming about a half second later. :) We also spent the first part screaming our conversations at each other because the wind was super intense. So after the beach phase we moved onto the sound phase which was much, much calmer… and we could actually talk like normal people and meet the fantastic people that both Katy and Matt are! They braved a lot of elements out there with us but we think the photos are worth it. :)

These two are kind of amazing, and I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard during a session in a long time (or while reading e-mail correspondences). Besides being awesome, their other handy attributes include working at a place where you can get free gourmet popsicles (and give some to your photographers) and having convenient access to the James K. Polk historic site where you can see, well, stuff about James K. Polk. That’s got to come in handy sometimes, though, right? And to answer the question on everyone’s mind: yes, they do have pine-scented candles with James K. Polk printed on them.
Our mission was, in Narissa and Sara’s words, “…for ya’ll to survive and for us to look like a straight couple.” We, of course, accepted this, as well as accepted a mission to photograph their Shepherd/Husky mix named Poncho Oscar who was absolutely ridiculous. Unbeknownst to all of us, we all also accepted the far less glamorous mission of being eaten alive by a multitude of fire ants which subsequently swelled up Carolyn’s foot for a good 3 days and Narissa’s ankle as well. But we think it was worth it.
We could on for a good while about how hilarious and kind and fantastic these two are, but we’re going to leave you some quotes about each other from them instead which kind of sum it all up.
Sara: “Narissa is honest, loving, tan year-round, genuine, hilarious, and absolutely beautiful. These are just a few of the reasons why I am going to make her my wife.”
Narissa: “I am looking forward to the day I can call Sara my woman-husband.”
Poncho: “These two ladies are crazy.”
I went to high school with the very lovely and talented Lindsay and was so happy to be contacted by her and her fiancé Jon for their engagement pictures! I went to high school with Jon too, and not that he wasn’t very lovely and talented, but we didn’t know each other then so I can’t comment on just how lovely and talented I’m sure he was at the time. ;) I can say that I’m very happy to have finally met him and that he’s a wonderful person and an amazing match for Lindsay. They love each other very much, writing adorable things about one another in the questionnaire we gave them, and they were super easy to work with despite us dragging them down back alleys in Oakmont and putting them next to construction dumpsters. :D They wanted the session to feel romantic, and while dumpsters don’t seem romantic at the time, they look REALLY good, ok?
The adorable white ball of fluff that you see in the beginning of this post is Beaumont, the happiest of all terriers. Lindsay saw a Cesar Dog Food commercial and decided that she must have a Westie… which I kind of think is an amazing inspiration for adopting a dog. They got one, named him Beaumont which sounds quite regal, and he lives up to his darling name. He can play dead and high-five and just generally runs around being cute. He has a super loving home with Lindsay and Jon and tells us that he is very excited for his parents to finally be married.
We’re so excited to be photographing the wedding of these two next summer! We will miss Beaumont’s presence, but maybe we can Skype him in?
