WHAT IS THIS TAX YOU SPEAK OF?

North Carolina makes photographers collect sales tax. Yesss, we are a service, but it’s a service that results in a product (the JPEGs) so NC deems that the entire fee is taxable. No, I can’t look the other way and you can’t pay me under the table.

SMALL BUSINESS BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY – WHAT IS IT?

Hey there! Are you a business owner or creative that needs headshots that aren’t lame? How about a variety of still life biz-related images to use for social media posts? And what about pictures of you doing your thing in a candid, natural way that screams “HELLO. I AM FUN YET PROFESSIONAL AT THE SAME TIME”? You’ve come to the right place. As a fellow local business owner, I know that a good website and social media presence helps attract 90% of your business. Having cohesive, professional images on these platforms goes a long way in gaining customers and building your brand. But showcasing your personality is just as important! It draws in potential clients, builds trust, and makes you stand out from the crowd. So I like to take pictures that showcase who you are, what you do, and how you do it… in a way that’s not lame. All shoots include natural headshots, photos of you working/creating/showcasing your business, and still life shots of items related to your business for branding/social marketing purposes. These sessions are great for local businesses, artists, and other creatives.

What about Headshot Mini Sessions to update my resume/LinkedIn?

I offer headshot mini sessions for $250+tax. They’re great for LinkedIn, job sites or dating sites. They’re 15 minutes in length and are taken at a predetermined location near my home in Durham, NC. The background is lightly wooded with trees and foliage. Upon completion, you’ll have 10 edited images delivered in 7 business days. No outfit or location changes permitted. Please contact me for more information.

Still have questions?

I’m looking for studio-type portraits with lights and a backdrop and stuff. Do you do those?

Nope, I specialize in natural light photography in non-staged environments, so I typically shoot in places of high natural light. I do still photograph in offices that have overhead lighting, but I don’t light it artificially myself, I just work with it. Occasionally my clients have their own backdrops that they’d like to provide, and in that case, I do work with backdrops, but I don’t bring my own.

Will you take headshots of all the 80 employees in our corporate office?

Sorry, no! I specialize in small business branding photos for small business teams of 1-5 people.

I don’t have an office or a home studio that’s photogenic. Can we still do pictures?

Absolutely! We will find a place outside that suits your personality and what you’re trying to showcase with your business or self. Alternatively, you can rent a place at Peerspace, which is a great rental resource for photoshoots where you can find all types of indoor environments for rent.

Do I need props?

Not necessarily, but I think it’s highly encouraged for branding photos to have with you items that reflect your business. These are easily photographable for still life branding photos and social media filler, but also for you to hold in some photos (to answer the age-old question of “What do I do with my hands?”). So what type of props? Think along these lines of my former clients: videographer > cameras, photo albums, laptop. Wellness coach and doctor > fruits and veggies, weights, stethoscope. Comic writer: comics, sketchbooks, stickers, illustrations.

How do you accept payment?

Payments are broken up into two parts. A $100+NC sales tax deposit is made within 7 days of signing the contract, and the remaining balance is due two weeks before the session. All monies are paid through a secure online checkout using your credit or debit card. I’ll give you a username and password once a contract is signed.

What happens if it rains?

If it’s outdoors and it rains, we simply reschedule. Boom! Problem solved. If your session is indoors, we typically won’t need to on account of the roof. But occasionally it’ll be super dark and rescheduling might be necessary depending on how gloomy it is. If you reschedule for rain, the deposit and remaining balance just carry over to the new date.

What happens if I need to reschedule for another reason?

You can reschedule for other reasons as well, such as illness (please contact me if you’re sick so I don’t get sick!). Just reach out and we’ll figure out a new date.

What if I don’t want my face on the internet?

I do not offer privacy contracts for branding photos and always maintain the right to blog, post, and share the photos of your branding session. If there are some photos you need me to withhold until a specific launch date, please reach out and let me know!

What should I/we wear?

Wear something you feel absolutely great in, as you’ll be using these photos a lot! You’ll want to love how you look in whatever you choose. You can bring outfit changes for different looks. Patterns are totally fine. If there are multiple people in the shoot, don’t all wearing the same color and don’t be super matchy-matchy (unless you have some sort of uniform, then it’s obviously acceptable). The only thing I would specifically avoid are articles of clothing that are neon colored (electric yellow, highlighter pink, etc). Anything that makes you look like you’re about to help a bunch of children cross the road or are trying to avoid being hit while jogging along a busy street are usually colors that don’t photograph well. Bright, crazy colors often reflect back onto your skin tone if you’re pale, and then kinda turn your skin that color too. So go for more neutral, earth-toney, or jewel-toned colors. Ask if you aren’t sure! I’m happy to help.

What happens between the contract and the shoot date?

You’ll have an extensive questionnaire that’s due two weeks before the session. I recommend filling it out close to the due date, but reading it beforehand so you have the questions in your mind for the next few months before your shoot. Then a week prior to the shoot, I will email you with all the details of the shoot and what I plan on covering. If you prefer a phone consultation instead of email to touch base before the shoot, just let me know and I’m happy to do so! The questionnaire and shoot prep email will cover everything that I need to know about you and your business for us to get great branding photos together.

When do I get the photos back?

After your shoot, I’ll take the pictures home, cull them down to the ones where you look good and edit those with my snazzy editing style. My editing style is pretty specific, so make sure you like it! All of my shoots are posted on the blog, so feel free to have a gander and enjoy. Your photos will be done 3-5 weeks after your shoot and uploaded to your online gallery. At that time, I’ll send you an e-mail to give you a heads up which will include instructions on how to access the gallery and download the photos. Because photos take 3-5 weeks for return, if you’re needing them for a specific project and have a due date, please plan accordingly.

What’s your editing style?

My editing style has a lot of colors and contrast, and is a bit bold and modern. Make sure you take a good look at my portfolio and blog to make sure you like how everything looks! If you like my content but not my editing, I’m not the right photographer for you, so please make sure we’re a good fit before booking.

what’s your photoshopping policy?

When I edit photos, I edit for basic color and contrast in Lightroom. I don’t routinely Photoshop things, and I’m not a professional retoucher. However, I will take out a blemish or two if they occur, but I won’t be photoshopping your hair, eye color, lines around your eyes, makeup regrets, or the Hawaiian shirt off your employee that you instructed him not to wear.
