Let me start by saying that Kim is 100% responsible for all the adorableness that you’re about to see below. She came up with the idea for a Fantastic Mr. Fox themed shoot, and then put together/made/brought the most adorable props in all of the land. We picked the spot. She drove out to meet us with literally a car trunk full of stuff that she made (this is the second time we’ve worked with Kim, and I can confidently say she’s one of the craftiest people I know besides my own mother). Then we stuffed as much as we could into a rolling red wagon and took it into the forest and (carefully) down some steps (thanks, Geoff!) and then set up camp (literally) in the woods.

At that point, Geoff set to work making a tent out of some blankets thanks to his a+ Boy Scout skills, while Blue put on a fox mask and immediately became the most adorable child I’ve ever seen. At one point there was an adorable blue beret, and there were lots of (really excellent!) Polaroids taken of us by Blue, all while his mother looked especially fabulous while hanging out in the woods (she looks 100% better than I do 100% of the time). Blue is a wonderfully polite, incredibly smart, and obviously adorable young man. His mother asked, “Can you tell Carolyn and Geoff what we’re wearing today?” and he responded with, “Our smiles” and the woodland creatures everywhere erupted into a collective “Awwwwwww!!!” At the end we got ice cream, and I think Roald Dahl and Wes Anderson would approve.

It’s always such a great experience being invited into clients’ homes to photograph their family being themselves. I love seeing all the different houses and decorating styles, for one, but I also love seeing the different interactions between families. Every family is different, and our job photographing them is never the same twice. This family featured two beautiful little girls (one a little more vivacious, the other a little more serious) who enjoyed showing us their collections of stuffed bunnies, climbing in their treehouse and in their living room, jumping on their trampoline, skipping rope, and putting on their mother’s high heels. They are energetic, independent, and intelligent, and we just tried to keep up. :) Mom and Dad were super welcoming to us and were really interested in having all the different facets of their family documented due to Mom’s background in journalism, and we were happy to oblige. We had an awesome time meeting this fantastic family of four!

Woah, you guys. When I opened up my email to see that I had an inquiry from this guy, I was half tempted to respond and tell him that I was booked for all of remaining space and time because I was way too nervous to shoot a session for him. I’ve been following/stalking/admiring Michael Moss and his photography work since 2008, since I first started my business and had zero clients. So to receive a super kind note from him asking us to shoot his promo session for his new website overhaul was high praise indeed. After I got over the initial shock and decided to refrain from telling him we were booked for all remaining space and time, we set up the session.

We were nervous. Well, I was nervous (Geoff is perpetually unworried and unconcerned). We hadn’t met and I was afraid I’d screw it up in some monumental and unforgivable way. Or my camera would die or I’d forget how to use it. But then the shoot started. And he was SO NICE. And he’s Canadian! I don’t know why, but this made me far less intimidated (it’s widely known that every single Canadian is nice), and then we had a good time. His wife Angelique (who, side note, is absolutely beautiful!) came with us on the session and did a great job being adorable and helpful and fabulous. And guess what? I don’t think we screwed it up. In fact, I think we did a pretty good job, but we also had some fabulous subjects to work with. Please check out Michael’s work if you haven’t had a chance, and enjoy our promo photos of him and Angelique!
